Term Pronunciation Definition
acolyte   A member of a religious order? or a person performing certain duties in the temple.
archdivine   The chief cleric of a major city or a province, perhaps even a broader area. Similar to an archbishop. Compare to divine.
Archipelago   See Roknar Archipelago.
Baocia bay-OH-sha Centralmost province of Chalion. Cities: Valenda, Taryoon. The Baocian guard wears green and black.
Baocia, Provincar of   Ruler of the province of Baocia in Chalion, son of the dowager Provincara, and uncle to Royesse Iselle.
Bastard   One of the five gods in Quintarian theology, but regarded as a demon in Quadrene theology. The Bastard is the god of balance, of all disasters out of season, of bastard children and orphans, of executioners and many other dirty jobs, and the god of odd loves, such as sodomy. The Bastard was begotten by a demon on the Lady of Summer. Acolytes wear white; rat and crow are sacred animals in Chalion, gull is sacred in Ibra.
Bastard's Day   An intercalary holiday, inserted every two years after Mother's Midsummer, to prevent the calendar precessing from alignment with the seasons.
Bastard's Teeth   A mountain range between Ibra and Chalion.
Beetim BEE-tim Huntsman for the dowager Provincara of Baocia.
Behar bah-HAR Brajaran poet, author of the classic verse romance The Legend of the Green Tree
Bergon, Royse berg-on Second son of the Fox of Ibra (and a child of his Darthacan second wife), who became the heir after the death of his rebellious older brother. Tall, brown hair tinged with reddish highlights. Childhood nickname used by his mother was Danni. He was kidnapped by his older brother and sold to the Roknari galleys, and was saved by Cazaril from being raped by the oar-master.
Betriz bee-TREZ See Ferrej, Betriz dy.
blocks-and-dodges   Game played with a carved board and colored marbles.
Bonneret, Learned BON-ur-RET Royina Iselle's private secretary, a divine of the Father. A neat dark-haired fellow about 30 years old.
Brajar brah-ZHAR Country to the east of Chalion, a royacy; language spoken is Ibran. Brajar has good ports.
Brajar, Roya of   Ruler of Brajar. "An aging drunkard who sports with his court ladies."
Brother   See Son of Autumn.
Cardegoss KAR-de-goss (rhymes with boss) City of Chalion; favored seat of the royas of Chalion. The city has seven gates.
castillar CAAS-till-lahr Title of nobility in Chalion, below march and above ser, roughly equivalent to an earl or baron.
castillara caas-till-LAHR-ah Wife of a castillar, or a female castillar.
Cazaril, Castillar Lupe dy KAAZ-ah-rill, LOO-py dee Protagonist of CoC, a former soldier, courtier, and scholar, most recently a galley slave of the Roknari. No longer holds the lands of Cazaril. Was a page in the household of the provincar of Baocia, rode courier for the provincar of Guarida, has been a soldier for the last seventeen years. Was made castle warder of Gotorget by March dy Jironal and held it nine months against besieging Roknari forces. Thirty-five years old but appears older, tall, graying beard, left hand is mangled, back has ropy scars from a severe flogging. Speaks and writes Darthacan and Roknari in addition to Ibran.
Cembuer SEM-buer (slight dipthong with the ue) Young Ibran lord who accompanies Bergon on the trip to Chalion.
Chalion CHAL-ee-on A country, a royacy. The country is land-locked, and has mountain ranges to the north, south, and west. Language spoken is Ibran; symbol is a royal leopard rampant upon a stylized castle.
Chalion, Orico dy CHAL-ee-on, OAR-ih-ko dee See Orico.
Clara, Mother CLARE-ah One of the Mother's midwives and an acolyte in Cardegoss, and a saint of the Mother. Middle-aged and dumpy.
Dalus DAAL-us Site of a battle in which Cazaril was a captain on the losing side.
Danni DAAN-ee Childhood nickname of Bergon, used by his mother.
Daris DARE-ihs Tongueless and thumbless undergroom in the Zangre, often serving Umegat. He is also a lay dedicat of the Bastard.
Darthaca DAR-tha-ka Country to the south and beyond the mountains from Chalion, with South Ibra between them. Language is Darthacan. Referred to as "Great Darthaca".
Daughter of Spring   One of the gods of the Quintarian and Quadrene religions, also called the Daughter or the Lady of Spring or the Sister. Colors are blue and white.
[Note from LMB: I rather think, but haven't had occasion to mention and therefore fix it yet, that the Daughter has something to do with general and/or early education, the sort most people do in the spring of their lives. Her theological point on the body in the five-point sign (or four point sign, if you are a Quadrene) is the forehead, after all. (Lois-Bujold Mailing List, 20 July 2002)]
Daughter's Day   Day of celebrations for the Daughter of Spring; includes collecting the quarterly gifts that will keep the temple running for three months. Household fires kept burning over the winter are extinguished, and a new fire is obtained at the temple.
Daughter's Order   See Order of the Daughter.
death magic   A ritual which involves asking the Bastard to let one of his demons into the world, and then the demon returns with 2 souls--that of the asker and that of the one on whom the ritual is cast. Punishments for unsuccessfully attempting death magic are ferocious. Successful death magic is a miracle of justice.
dedicat DED-ih-caat A member of a religious order, one who has made a higher level of commitment than a lay dedicat on the order of making their service to their god into a lifetime profession. Dedicats are better educated than lay dedicats. Dedicat is the first stage of the process of becoming a divine.
dedicat-commander   A lay dedicat or dedicat serving as an officer in a military order.
Demi DEM-mee Groom in the castle in Valenda.
Deni   Groom in the castle at Valenda (typo for Demi).
divine   A member of a religious order, equivalent to a priest. A divine is usually the head of a temple and is theologically educated, although divines in rural areas may not be as educated.
Dondo   See Jironal, Dondo dy.
dowager Provincara   See Provincara, the.
Father of Winter   One of the gods of the Quintarian and Quadrene religions, also called the Father. Colors are black and gray; acolytes wear gray.
Father's Day   A festival day, presumably at midwinter.
Father's Feast   Feast held on the Father's Day, typically with sacred music and dancing.
Ferda FUR-da See Gura, Ferda dy.
Ferrej, Betriz dy fer-EZH, bee-TREZ dee Daughter of Ser dy Ferrej, companion to Royesse Iselle. Brunette; nineteen years old.
Ferrej, Ser dy fer-EZH Castle warder for the dowager Provincara of Baocia, father of Betriz. Stoutish, middle-aged.
Five-fold sacred gesture   Gesture of the Quintarian religion, performed when swearing an oath. The hand is touched to the forehead, lip, navel, and groin, then spread flat over the heart. Quadrenes make a similar gesture as forehead, navel, groin, and heart with the thumb tucked beneath the palm, denying the fifth finger that is the Bastard's. The forehead represents the Daughter.
Foix dy Gura FOY dee GUR-ra See Gura, Foix dy.
Fonsa FAWN-sa Roya of Chalion before Ias, known as Fonsa the Wise or, after his death, Fonsa the Fairly-Wise.
Fonsa's Tower   Round tower of the Zangre, where Fonsa worked death magic against the Golden General. The tower burned that night, and was bricked up and not repaired.
Fox of Ibra, the   Roya of Ibra. Over 70, stringy, balding, formerly red hair is now a white fringe, vigorous.
General of the [Daughter's/Son's] Order   Head of the Daughter's Order or Son's Order in Chalion. Lucrative and powerful positions, the Son's more so than the Daughter's.
Golden General, the   A Roknari ruler who united all five Roknari princedoms then prepared to march south on Chalion, Ibra, and Brajar against the "Quintarian heretics". Roya Fonsa of Chalion was granted death magic on him, but his unfulfilled destiny then cursed Chalion, specifically Fonsa's heirs. Also known as the Lion of Roknar.
Gotorget GOH-tor-get Fortress in the north of Chalion or in Roknar, which Cazaril held against besieging Roknari forces for nine months before being ordered to surrender to them. Commands the mountain passes that lead to Visping.
Guarida gwa-REE-dah A province of Chalion. Borders on the Roknari princedom once ruled by Olus.
Guarida, Provincar of   Ruler of the province of Guarida. Cazaril rode courier for him and was in his train in a border war with Roknari prince Olus.
Gura, Ferda dy GUR-ra, FUR-da dee Cousin of Palli and older brother to Foix, lieutenant to Palli's master of horse, a member of the Daughter's Order. Of middle height, wiry, an obvious rider as his legs are slightly bowed.
Gura, Foix dy GUR-ra, FOY dee Cousin of Palli, younger brother of Ferda, and a member of the Daughter's Order. Broad and muscular.
Heron, Marchess dy HEH-ron A noblewoman of Chalion.
High Ones   Members of the Holy Family.
Holy Family   The gods of Quintarian (and Quadrene, if the Bastard is omitted) theology. There are divines of the Holy Family, as well as divines of individual gods.
Hueltar, Lady Tessa dy HWEL-tar Cousin and companion to the Dowager Provincara of Baocia, a lay dedicat of the Temple.
Huesta, March dy HWEST-ah Wealthy brother-in-law and major supporter of the Provincar dy Baocia.
Ias EYE-ass Roya of Chalion prior to Orico, sixth and youngest son of Fonsa the Wise. Was known as Ias the Good. Dy Lutez was his closest advisor, and Ias died partially as a result of grief and guilt over dy Lutez's death.
Ias's Tower   A square tower of the Zangre which dominates the courtyard, built by Roya Ias.
Ibra IB-rah Country to the west of Chalion, a royacy; language spoken is Ibran, though southernmost provinces speak Darthacan. City: Zagosur (port).
Ibra, Fox of   See Fox of Ibra.
Ibra, Heir of   Older (unnamed in the book) son of the Fox of Ibra. He rebelled against his father from his base in South Ibra after another failed rebellion and a treaty the previous summer and a secret falling-out in the autumn.
Ibra, Roya of   See Fox of Ibra.
Ibran IB-rahn 1. Of Ibra.
2. The language of Ibra, Chalion, and Brajar.
Ildar, Provincar dy IHL-dar Ruler of the province of Ildar, in Chalion. The current holder of the title dies during CoC, and the title is given to Martou dy Jironal instead of to the nephew the provincar's family was promoting.
Iselle is-SELL Royesse of Chalion. Daughter of Ias and Ista, older sister of Royse Teidez, half-sister of Roya Orico. A generous mouth, hair in ringlets neither blond nor red, pale skin, heavy-lidded eyes, turns sixteen 6 weeks after the opening of Curse of Chalion; shorter than Betriz. Birthday is at the midpoint of spring. Cazaril tells Ista she is quick at arithmetic and geometry, and "persistent" at Darthacan.
Ista IS-tah Dowager Royina of Chalion, married Roya Ias in his second, her first marriage; was widowed early. Youngest daughter of the Dowager Provincara, and has been living with her mother for six years at the opening of CoC. Masses of crinkly hair, once gold, now darkened to dull dun, bitten fingernails, gray eyes.
Jironal, Dondo dy JEER-o-nel, DON-doh dee Younger brother of the March dy Jironal, named to be General of the Daughter's Order early in CoC, and then named March dy Jironal after Martou becomes provincar dy Ildar. Was a part of the border war against Olus, and was sent with Cazaril as envoys to deliver an ultimatum when Olus was cornered. A libertine. Stocky, black eyebrows, tendency to sweat profusely, forty years old. Two daughters by his late first wife.
Jironal, March Martou dy JEER-o-nel, Mar-TOO dee Ruler of the march of Jironal, Chancellor of Chalion, general of the Son's Order, then named Provincar dy Ildar on the death of dy Ildar, when the title of March dy Jironal is passed to Dondo. Led Roya Orico's forces to the north coast for a winter campaign three years before CoC begins, during which he made Cazaril castle warder of Gotorget. Spare, graying, often unsmiling, cool of eye, tense with energy.
Joal, Ser dy ZHOHL Courtier of Chalion and one of Dondo dy Jironal's bravos; attempts to challenge Cazaril to a duel.
Labran LAAB-raan A province of Chalion. Borders on Roknar; was invaded by the Golden General.
Labran, Provincar of   A noble of Chalion, ruler of the province of Labran. Nephew of Royina Sara.
Lady of Spring   See Daughter of Spring
Lady of Summer   See Mother of Summer.
lay dedicat   A person who has made a commitment to one of the gods. Lay dedicats may serve in the military orders as soldier-brothers, or may perform various non-military functions in the service of their god.
learned   A courtesy title for any divine.
Lion of Roknar   See Golden General.
lord dedicat   A lay dedicat performing a largely administrative role in a military order. Lord dedicats are drawn from the nobility.
Lupe LOO-py See Castillar Lupe dy Cazaril
Lutez, Lord dy loo-TEZ Boyhood friend, closest advisor for 30 years, brother in arms, and lover to Roya Ias; arranged Ias's second marriage (to Ista). Provincar of two districts, chancellor of Chalion, marshal of Ias's household troops, master of the order of the Son. Publicly believed to have been accused of treason and died under torture; actually died while attempting to break the Golden General's curse: was drowned voluntarily for the first death, but refused to try the second death and was forced by Ias and Ista. He could not be revived after the second death.
march MARCH 1. Title of nobility, below provincar and above castillar, roughly equivalent to a marquess.
2. The lands held by such a noble.
marchess Mar-CHESS The wife of a march, or a female march.
Maroc, Ser dy mare-ock A courtier of Chalion, maker of Orico's armor and wardrobe. Brings the accusation of rape against Cazaril because of the flogging scars.
Martou mar-TOO See Jironal, Martou dy.
memori boards mehm-MORE-ih Plaques or similar items placed in a chapel in memory of a family member, similar to small Chinese shrines: "...tiers of little family memori boards" (in the chapel of the castle in Valenda)
Mendenal MEN-den-all Archdivine of Cardegoss.
Mother of Summer   One of the gods of the Quintarian and Quadrene religions, also called the Mother, or the Lady of Summer. Acolytes wear green. Healing and health are under the purview of the Mother. The Bastard is a child of the Mother and a demon.
Mother's Midsummer   A festival day.
mourning colors   black and lavender
Naoza, ser dy na-OH-zah Celebrated duelist in Valenda, assassinated by death magic by a provincial wool merchant whose only son he had killed in a duel.
Officer of Inquiry   A member of the Chancellery of Justice of a province or (presumably) a royacy, sent to investigate suspected crimes. There are also Inquirers for Temples which investigate such things as alleged death magic attempts.
oil cake   Food sold by street vendors in Valenda.
Olus OH-lus A mad Roknari prince, involved in a border war against Chalion five years before the opening of CoC; offered envoys Dondo dy Jironal and Cazaril the choice of cutting off the other's head or dying. He was murdered by his own bodyguards a year after the border war.
Order of the Bastard   A religious order. Among its main concerns are the Temple's foundling hospitals and orphanages.
Order of the Daughter   A military order, far smaller than the Son's, concerns itself with domestic matters such as guarding temples, controlling banditry, etc.
Order of the Son   A military order in Chalion, with a tradition of battling the Roknari; most young men of military leaning swear themselves to the Son's Order.
Ordol OAR-dole Author of The Fivefold Pathway of the Soul: On the True Methods of Quintarian Theology, a major (perhaps the major) religious work of Quintarian theology.
Orico OAR-ih-ko Present roya of Chalion at the opening of CoC; son of Ias and his Brajaran first wife. A little below average height; nose was broken in an accident and looks like a squashed mushroom in the middle of his face; hair was auburn, now graying to roan, curly; face pale and puffy, body grossly broadened.
Paginine PAH-gah-NEEN A petty judge serving the municipality of Taryoon, and a saint of the Father which allows him to sometimes tell who is lying.
Palli PAL-ee see March dy Palliar
Palliar PAL-ee-are A region of Chalion (of Baocia?)
Palliar, March dy PAL-ee-are, MARCH dee A noble of Chalion, holds the lands of Palliar, lord dedicat of the Daughter's Order at Palliar, and a close friend of Cazaril: Cazaril's favorite lieutenant at Gotorget. A tall athletic man with dark hair.
Palma PAHM-ah A village twenty-five miles from Valenda on the road from Ibra. The region around Palma is noted for fine pasturage, and a post of the Daughter's Order there is devoted to breeding and training remounts for the Temple.
provincar PRAH-vin-SAHR Title of nobility, below a roya and above a march, roughly equivalent to a duke. Addressed as "Your Grace".
provincara PRAH-vin-SAHR-a Wife of a provincar, or a female provincar. Addressed as "Your Grace". The Provincara (capitalized) is the dowager Provincara of Baocia in CoC.
Provincara, the   Widow of the former Provincar of Baocia, still controlling the (castle/palace/fortress) in Valenda. Her husband died ten years before CoC begins. Her son is current ruler of Baocia; her youngest child is Ista, the dowager royina of Chalion.
Quadrene kwahd-REEN Pertaining to a religion prevalent in Roknar which believes in four gods, omitting the Bastard. See also the Roknari heresy of the four gods; contrast with Quintarian.
Quintarian kwihn-TARE-ih-an Pertaining to a religion prevalent in Chalion, Brajar, and Ibra which believes in five gods: the Father, the Mother, the Son, the Daughter, and the Bastard. Contrast with Quadrene.
Rinal, Lord dy rih-NAL One of the younger courtiers of Chalion. Plays the bandit king at a mock abduction of Iselle; witnesses the Lady Pig incident and makes a butt of Dondo.
Rojeras, Dedicat ro-ZHER-as A lay dedicat and a master physician of the Temple Hospital of the Mother's Mercy in Cardegoss who has made a special study of wasting diseases. About 40, with sandy hair slightly receding from his forehead, freckles, and blue eyes.
Roknar ROCK-nahr A country to the north of Chalion which consists of five princedoms on the mainland and the Rocknari Archipelago; language is Roknari. Roknari believe in four gods (omitting the Bastard) and make sodomy a crime subject to torture and hanging.
Roknar Archipelago   Group of islands which are part of Roknar, but which are not part of the Rocknari Princedoms.
Roknari rock-NAH-ree 1. Of Roknar.
2. The language of Roknar, which has a complex system of address forms depending on the rank of the speakers.
Roknari heresy of the four gods   Belief in the Roknari princedoms that the Bastard is a demon like his father, not a god after his mother the Lady of Summer, making crimes of the odd loves that the Bastard rules; the Quadrene faith.
roya ROY-ah Ruler of a country, equivalent to a king.
royal   Gold coin in Chalion.
roya's milestone   Stones set to mark certain mileages on the roads of Chalion.
royesse roy-YES Daughter of a roya, a princess.
royina roy-EE-nah The wife of a roya, or (possibly) a female ruler of a country: a queen.
royse ROISE Son of a roya, a prince.
Sanda, Ser dy SAN-dah Secretary-tutor to Royse Teidez, was murdered, probably by Dondo dy Jironal in order to gain more influence over Teidez.
saint   In Chalion, a living soul who gives the gift of their soul (the control thereof) to their god, thereby allowing the god to act in the world. Saints have a second sight that allows them to see a glow on other saints, but not their own. The person ceases to be a saint when the god's presence is withdrawn, and they cease to glow.
Sara, Royina SARE-ah Royina of Chalion, wife of Orico, has chambers on top of Ias's Tower. Mid-thirties, her earlier prettiness now faded and worn.
ser SIR Lowest title of nobility, below a castillar in rank.
sera   Wife of a ser, or a female ser.
sermon of the cups   Classic sermon by Ordol, which illustrates that the gods of Chalion cannot act unless a living soul opens to them and gives up his or her will.
Snowflake   A white mule bought by the Provincara for Iselle.
Sister   See Daughter of Spring.
soldier-brother   A lay dedicat serving in one of the military/religious orders such as the Order of the Son.
Son of Autumn   One of the gods of the Quintarian and Quadrene religions, also called the Son or the Brother; god of the hunt and of war. Acolytes wear red-orange. Symbols include "weapons and animals and wine casks".
Sould, March dy SOOLD Young Ibran lord who accompanies Bergon on the trip to Chalion. Slightly older than dy Tagille and dy Cembuer.
South Ibra   Province of Ibra, led in rebellion against the Fox of Ibra by his heir; lies between Chalion and Darthaca.
subdivine   A divine working in a subordinate capacity in a larger temple, among other roles.
Tagille, dy ta-GEEL Young Ibran lord who accompanies Bergon on the trip to Chalion.
Taryoon tarry-OON Town in Baocia, now the seat of government as the dowager Provincara's son moved it from Valenda on inheriting his father's gift. Southeast of Valenda.
Teidez, Royse teh-DES Royse of Chalion, half-brother to Roya Orico, younger brother of Iselle, son of Ias and Ista. Fourteen years old at the opening of CoC. Curly hair a shade redder than Iselle's, a wide mouth.
Temple Hospital of the Mother's Mercy   Hospitals of this name exist in Zagosur (dedicated to the succor of men cast up by the sea) and in Cardegoss (where Dedicat Rojeras practices).
Temple of the Holy Family   A building for religious ceremonies in Chalion. Usual construction is four-lobed about a central court, with one altar in each lobe for the god of each season. The Bastard has a separate round tower directly back of his Mother's gate.
Thistan THIS-tan (th as in think) A province of Chalion, east of Baocia. Martou dy Jironal's funeral was conducted there.
Thistan, provincar of   Ruler of the province of Thistan, son-in-law of Martou dy Jironal.
Umegat OO-me-gat Roknari head groom to Orico, a scholar, and both a divine and a saint of the Bastard, who hosts the miracle of the menagerie that keeps Orico alive. As a young divine, was an assistant Inquirer for the Temple investigating charges of death magic. Of noble Roknari descent, tall but a little stooped, leathery skin that had been gold, now faded to ivory, curly bronze hair going gray.
vaida vah-EE-dah Copper coin in Baocia (probably throughout Chalion).
Valenda va-LIN-dah Town in Chalion situated on a low hill, houses of ochre sandstone, Provincara's castle on the hilltop. Seat of government for the province of Baocia under the previous Provincar. Northwest of Taryoon.
vella VELL-ah Herbivorous goat-like animal from somewhere beyond the Archipelago. Vella are like tall leggy goats, with long sweeping necks, thick soft fur, and brown eyes and sweeping eyelashes.
vest cloak   An open-fronted, loose sleeveless coat, of varying length from thigh to floor, variously lined or decorated, designed to be worn over other garments. See a Renaissance shaube for an example: http://www.angevintreasures.com/aenor/Corun.jpg.
Visping VIS-ping Port in Roknar. The unransomed men from Gotorget were marched there to be sold to Roknari corsair masters.
Vrese, the Honorable VREES Provincial judge/justiciar in Valenda who ruled the death of the wool-merchant's son to not be murder, thought to be corrupt. A dour-looking fellow of middle years.
Vrit, Sera Nan dy VRIT (rhymes with hit) Middle-aged lady-in-waiting to Iselle.
Yarrin, Provincar dy YAR-in (rhymes with "far in") A provincar of Chalion; lord dedicat of the Daughter's Order; highest-ranking lord of Chalion holding allegiance to the Daughter's Order.
Yiss, March dy YIHS Darthacan noble, has twin 12-year-old sons.
Yiss   A land-locked territory located just across the Darthacan-Chalion border from Chalion, pays fealty to Darthaca but is independent of it. Called "high march" of Yiss in two references, but whether this is another degree of nobility is unclear.
Zagosur ZAHG-o-sir A port city of Ibra, nearly 300 miles from Baocia.
Zangre ZAN-gry (rhymes with angry) The great royal keep of Chalion, located at Cardegoss.
Zavar Zaa-VAR A castle in Chalion, close to the Ibran border.
Zavar, Castillar dy   Holder of the fortress of Zavar.
